Elbow pains after arm wrestling
Reply Quote

Hi,

I have been training for an arm wrestling tournament for the last few weeks by arm wrestling with my friends.  The only problem is that my arm is killing me, especially my elbow.  What am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it and make sure this doesn't happen again?

Chris

This is likely from a simple cause:  too much armwrestling!  It is easy to get over-eager and practice a bit too much without even realizing it.  This is because armwrestling does not stress the muscles nearly as much as it stresses the tendons and ligaments in the arm.  These tendons and ligaments recover at a much slower rate than do your muscles.  Unless you have been armwrestling for a year or more on a regular basis, it probably doesn't make sense to practice armwrestling more than once every two weeks.

Hope this helps!

Try to take it easy and start taking a glucosamine supplement to help repair the damage. Also apply topical pain relivers the the area and wrap it in an elastic elbow brace. Use ice as well. Also light wrist curls can be done to strengthen the tendons.

Thank you for the responses.  I have been slowing down on armwrestling and definitely do not practice for as long now.  I will also take the supplement you mentioned.

I also had another question.  I have been thinking about maybe just wearing one of those elbow brace/wrap kind of things on my elbow when I armwrestle for extra support.  But one of my buddies who I armwrestle with says he thinks they are illegal.  Could somebody please clue me in?  Thanks for any answers.

Chris

Yes in a tournament they are illegal to wear. But in practice and on your own time perfectly ok. Remember to apply heat to the elbow with ice and pound the glucosamine and perhaps some deep tissue massage buy a hand held massage machine from Wally-World and keep the topical pain relivers on it as well.

Thanks for the tips man.  I will have to go look at Walmart for a handheld massage machine.  Right now it is sore to the touch on the inside of my elbow so I don't think I will use it for a couple days!  About the elbow wrap/brace, I am now thinking that maybe I will hurt my elbow if I practice with it and then cannot wear it in a tournament since my elbow will get used to the support.  Thanks for the help.

I have pains not in my elbow but in my wrist.  It is in the part on the side of my pinky and is near the tendons down there.  What would that be caused by and how to prevent it?

Your always going to have some pain there. It is where people have applied alot of back pressure in order to try and open your hand. You can also get it from alot of supination pronation exercises. You should rest it as long as neccessary for it to feel better and continue to train. I used to get pain there from using that inverted double armcurl bar with heavy weight. I had a friend and we would throw on the weight belts and just see how much we could pile on. eventually it became a chronic pain and I had to rest it. Now on the other hand you could also be experiencing the same kind of pain from simply laying out too much. In some cases if you pull on tendons alot like we do and you lay off too much it will ache from being stove up. In this case I would suggest that you used a hand gripper starting light and then building to a heavier one about once a week to work out this stove pain caused from laying off alot. In the end no one knows exactly what the answer is because it could result from two different spectrums. I would urge you to read what I have written and then examine it closley and decide which it is. No one would be more qualified than yourself in making the determination of which. This is what I have said all along about each person being unique and what works for one person might not be exactly what another person needs. I will tell you the advice in this thread previously was great advice though. Use some heat at night and take Glucosamine sulfate with Chondroitin . I am old and I am really conciencious about the type I take. This may help alot of ya'll. Glucosamine usually comes more in a tablet form and is hard on your body to break it down. If you have a walgreens near where you live they make some with chondroitin that is in capsule form. I have found this to be the most effective type of anything on the market that I have used. They are 500mg  glucosamine and 400 mg chondroitin capsules. If they have a sale where you live it is sometimes buy one and get one free of the 120 capsules for like 29 bucks. That means you get 240 capsules for that price. I have been taking this product for about 6 years or longer and cannot see ever not taking it as long as I live. This is just my opinion though. It was originally designed for horses but then was discovered to work on atheletes with arthritic problems. I think the early days it was found to work with a major league baseball team and that is how it made the transfer from the racetrack to the sports arena. It is a suppliment simply and I got my uncle who was a professor at the time at the University of Georgia to take it. He was amazed and I am sure still takes it to this day.

ps. I also just thought a second time about your name hehe. You know that if you use those psp / nintendo / xbox / anyhing else including a keyboard and a mouse in gaming that you can also have all kinds of pains and all this advice will be the same. Too much game controller = lay off and let it heel
